Seventeen years ago writer and director Del Shores released Sordid Lives, a dark comedy that dealt with religious fervor, bigotry and coming out in a small Texas town. The film quickly became an LGBT cult classic. This year the sequel, A Very Sordid Wedding, premiered at OutFest LA. It toured the film festivals to rave reviews and sold out shows. The sequel stars many of the original cast including Bonnie Bedelia, Ann Walker, Kirk Geiger, Leslie Jordan, Newell Alexander and Lorna Scott. The film addresses how attitudes toward LGBT equality have evolved, or not, in the bible belt. I had the opportunity to speak with Del about his new film. We chatted about the timing for his latest film, his talented cast, growing up as a gay preacher’s kid and the hope that film can lead people on the journey to acceptance of LGBT people.
